Writing A Descriptive Essay
Writing A Descriptive Essay As a good test, I tell my students they should never be more than one sentence away from their thesis. By this, I mean that if, at any point in their essay, they need more than one sentence to connect what they're saying back to their thesis then they are off-track. To build a house, you follow codes that ensure a basic build quality. A house that meets this standard, won't fall over, let the rain in, or let the heat out. This initial score also shocks some students into reality and pushes them to work harder on the specific writing assignment. While your topic sentence should be limited to a single sentence, your elaboration can be longer. Together, these two or more sentences form your full statement of argument. This is where your topic is explained, described and argued. A thesis statement has two parts; the first part states the topic and the second part states the point. The thesis statement tells the readers what the essay will be about. It will also give readers an idea as to what position you are taking. At this point, students are instructed to revise/edit/rewrite their essays by an assigned date in order to receive HALF THE POINTS BACK TO 100. This means that if a student initially scored a 70 on the essay, he/she has the potential to earn a maximum score of an 85 on the essay. If a student scored a 90 on the first submission, that student has the potential to earn up to a 95 on the essay, and so on. If a student scored a 99 or 100 on the essay, the student has the potential to earn bonus points on the essay grade. Whether itâs a true story or not is irrelevant; fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry are all types of narrative writing. In reality, all types of writing exist to argue a specific point. So even though narrative writing is a more creative type of writing, it is still an argument and should be treated as such. The main purpose of descriptive writing is to describe a subject to form a clear idea in the readerâs mind. This writing style draws attention to details to outline the topic. Writing a descriptive essay requires clear and vivid language to accurately describe the subject. The senses become very important in descriptive writing because they help to bring ordinary moments to life. The reader should be left with a vibrant understanding of the topic at hand. How you dress helps others understand who you are, describes a particular sentiment to those who see you, and signals a subconscious message to be interpreted by others. To avoid this, always use proofreading software, such as Grammarly, to weed out the major errors. Follow up with a close reading of your entire paper. If you want to write better essays, you will need to understand the criteria teachers use to score them. Generally, narrative writing is less common in the academic world because the narrative style exists to tell stories. As stated previously, I will grade the essay using the rubric and assign it an initial grade out of 100. However, this is not the end of the writing process or grading process. How you write will give similar signals to others that help them understand what youâre trying to communicate. Also, like fashion styles, writing styles have particular times and places in which they should be employed or restrained. Itâs inappropriate to wear white to a wedding if youâre not the bride; similarly, itâs inappropriate to use certain writing styles for specific types of writing. Often times, the topic of the essay will be assigned. If this is the case for you, donât rush off to step number two. Here are the seven steps in the essay writing process and ample tools to help you succeed. Plus, in this day and age, there are technological tools to help you with just about anything â" essay writing is no exception. You can alter these particular resubmission requirements as best fits your group of students.
